📖 Jonah

“God’s mercy reaches farther than we can imagine.”

Introduction

The Book of Jonah tells the story of a reluctant prophet whom God sends to the city of Nineveh. Instead of obeying immediately, Jonah runs from God’s calling, only to discover that God’s mercy and compassion extend to all people.

More than a story about a great fish, Jonah reveals God’s patient love, His desire for repentance, and His compassion toward both His people and the nations.

Author

The author of Jonah is not identified in the book.

The events center on the prophet Jonah, who also appears in 2 Kings 14:25 during the reign of King Jeroboam II.

Historical Background

Jonah ministered during a time when the Assyrian Empire was becoming increasingly powerful. Nineveh, the capital of Assyria, was known for its violence and wickedness.

God’s command for Jonah to preach to Nineveh demonstrated His concern for people beyond Israel and His willingness to forgive those who genuinely repent.
